I have recently switched a book, because the book that I was reading before did not really catch my interest. The book I am reading now is called The Border Town (边城). This book is written by Shen Congwen.
The first reason is this author was initially trained for a career in military, a soldier in Chinese Army. He could be considered a WW1 veteran in China.
He quitted the army, and devoted himself into literature teaching in various colleges, is the second reason why I would be friends with him. During the war times, young people that were not in the military, really needed to learn and feel strong from the inside. He helped them out.
When the wars ended, he suffered through the Communist Revolution and recovered. This is the third reason. A lot of fiction writers either gave up or got caught by the government and died. Although he went through the hard times, he never published another work of fiction.
His language is in between the time of old Chinese and modern Chinese. It is like between Shakespeare and Flannery O'conner. When the language is easy to understand, he made it very beautiful at the same time. This is the forth reason.
The final reason is the place where the story took place in this book is actually where he was from. This book is so famous that people from all over the country want to see this place. A lot of his readers went there just because he wrote it so beautifully that the dictions motivated the readers. If I have a chance, I would definitely go.
I have read 3 hrs this week.
